Queen of Persia – Part I

Hadassah by Poussin
King of 127 Provinces

Most are familiar with the story of the Jewish Queen Esther and the events which resulted in the celebration of Purim. (For more on this see my article April Fools.) Since Purim is coming up, I thought I would explore the history of that era a little in the next couple of articles.

Purim is a wonderful story of sacrifice, courage, and duty. One woman’s courage changed the course of history regarding a race of people. She was so revered in Jewish history that the great Rabbi Maimonides said concerning her: “in Messiah’s days the prophets and hagiographa shall pass away, except ‘Esther’, which will remain with the Pentateuch.” What many may not realize is that there  is more to this great story. A close inspection of Biblical and historical records reveals little known facts which offer valuable insights into this important time for the Jewish and Persian peoples.

At the height of the Persian power and influence, Darius the Great ruled over 127 provinces. He was the son of Hystaspes and the third king of the Achaemenid Empire. His revolutionary tribute system, which allowed goods in lieu of gold and silver, earned him the title of “huckster” from the historian Herodotus.

In the Old Testament, it was during the reign of Darius the Great that the second temple was completed. In his second year, he gave permission to the Jewish repatriates to build their holy temple. By Darius’s sixth year the 2nd temple was completed and in the spring of the following year it was dedicated. His generous support in the building efforts, as described in Ezra 6:8-9, confirms in part the estimation of Herodotus. Notice in the passage below, he commands the Jewish people be given, “of the tribute beyond the river……bullocks, and rams, and lambs,…wheat, salt, wine and oil.”

KJVEzra 6:8-9
8 Moreover I make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the river, forthwith expenses be given unto these men, that they be not hindered. 9 And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail:

Historically, Darius son of Hystaspes is known by the titles of Ahasuerus, Darius, and Artaxerxes.

Josephus speaks of him as Darius:
Antiquities of the Jews 11:33
Now, in the first year of the king’s reign, Darius feasted those who were about him, and those born in his house, with the rulers of the Medes, and princes of the Persians, and the toparches of India and Ethiopia, and the generals of the armies, of his hundred and twenty-seven provinces.

The Apocryphal book of 1 Esdras 3:1 also acknowledges him as Darius:
1 Esdras 3:1
Now when Darius reigned, he made a great feast unto all his subjects, and unto all his household, and unto all the princes of Media and Persia, 2 And to all the governors and captains and lieutenants that were under him, from India unto Ethiopia, of an hundred twenty and seven provinces.

The book of Esther calls the Persian king who ruled over 127 provinces by the name of Ahasuerus:
KJVEsther 1:1
Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this is Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces:)

The LXE version of Esther calls him Artaxerxes as does the Greek version Ester 11:1-2 and 16:1
LXE Esther 1:1
In the second year of the reign of Artaxerxes the great king, on the first day of Nisan, Mardochaeus the son of Jairus, the son of Semeias, the son of Chisaeus, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Jew dwelling in the city Susa, a grat great man, serving in the king’s palace, saw a vision. Now he was of the captivity which Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had carried captive from Jerusalem, with Jechonias the king of Judea.

Ester (Greek) 11:1-2
In the fourth year of the reign of Ptolemeus and Cleopatra, Dositheus, who said he was a priest and Levite, and Ptolemeus his son, brought this epistle of Phurim, which they said was the same, and that Lysimachus the son of Ptolemeus, that was in Jerusalem, had interpreted it. 2 In the second year of the reign of Artexerxes the great, in the first day of the month Nisan, Mardocheus the son of Jairus, the son of Semei, the son of Cisai, of the tribe of Benjamin, had a dream;

Ester (Greek) 16:1
The great king Artexerxes unto the princes and governors of an hundred and seven and twenty provinces from India unto Ethiopia, and unto all our faithful subjects, greeting.

The chronologist Ussher calls him Artaxerxes the Great, Ahasuerus or Darius.
Ussher, Anals of the World:
3484c AM, 4194 JP, 520 BC—
1015. “Mordecai, the Jew, in the Greek edition of Esther {Apc Est 11:1-12}, is said to have had a dream on the first day of the month of Nisan, in the second year of the reign of Artaxerxes the Great (or Ahasuerus or Darius, the son of Hystaspes), concerning a river signifying Esther and two dragons portending himself and Haman. {Apc Est 10:4-13}”

Louis Ginzberg in his compilation of Talmudic tradition called the Persian king who ruled over 127 provinces by the title of Ahasuerus.
Legends of the Jews XXII. Esther
The first part of the celebration was given over to the hundred and twenty-seven rulers of the hundred and twenty-seven provinces of his empire.

Last but not least, Ezra 6:14 identifies the Persian king who helped in building the temple as Darius – even – Artaxerxes king of Persia. (Please note the “waw” connected to Artaxerxes in Ezra 6:14 can be used as either a conjunction or a hendiadys. The context defines the usage. The context of Ezra 6 requires the “waw” be used as a hendiadys. i.e. two words with one meaning. For more on this see TWOT Hebrew lexicon 519.0)

KJVEzra 6:14-15
14 And the elders of the Jews builded, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they builded, and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandment of Cyrus, and Darius, [even] Artaxerxes king of Persia. 15 And this house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king.

In Part 2 of The Queen of Persia, I will look at the contemporaneous relationship between the Babylonians, Persians, Medians, and Judeans. This table is based upon an original work by Richard Edmund Tyrwhitt from his book “Esther and Ahasuerus” (1868). It provides additional context and insights into the intrigues and alliances of that era.

The Daughter of Heli

Matthew1_Luke3_200In my article, A New Testament Cipher, I showed how the list of Matthew 1 was an intentional arrangement of Jesus’ lineage in order to convey additional information.  Luke 3 also gives a lineage of Jesus and like Matthew 1, it also has a story to tell. Scholars have long questioned which lineage is through Mary and which is through Joseph.  Intriguingly, when the lists are examined in a larger context, it is their arrangement that provides the best evidence to answer this question.

Let’s look at the crux of the debate:

Luke 3:23   And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,

Matthew 1:16  And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

The New Testament claims that Mary conceived Jesus by the Spirit of YHWH. (See my article here for more on this); this obviously means he did not have an earthly father.  As you can see in the two verses above, Joseph is listed as the father of Jesus.  In one of these, Joseph is listed in place of Mary because even though one’s lineage passed through the mother, it was the husband or father who was normally listed.

One of the lists to the right is the physical line of Jesus through Mary, his mother.  The other, by default, is the lineage of Joseph, the “legal”,  adoptive father of Jesus. One of the most compelling arguments for Luke 3 being the physical lineage of Jesus is found in an Old Testament curse.  If you’ve read my article Zerubbabel and the Promise you know the Old Testament king Jechonias (also Coniah) was cursed by YHWH and no man of his lineage would ever “prosper” on the throne of David.

Jeremiah 22:24-30   24 As I live, saith YHWH, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet upon my right hand, yet would I pluck thee thence;  25 And I will give thee into the hand of them that seek thy life, and into the hand of them whose face thou fearest, even into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans.  26 And I will cast thee out, and thy mother that bare thee, into another country, where ye were not born; and there shall ye die.  27 But to the land whereunto they desire to return, thither shall they not return.  28 Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol? is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?  29 O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of YHWH.  30 Thus saith YHWH, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.

Okay, so we have evidence which shows which list is not the lineage of Jesus, but is there any confirming evidence to show that Luke 3 was in fact the lineage of Jesus through Mary? I believe there is.  Luke 3:23 states that Jesus was “the supposed” son of Joseph, the son of Heli.  The phrase “the supposed” is from the Greek nomizo which means as was the custom in the sense of a legal custom.  In other words, Joseph was the legal father of Jesus; not the literal father.  As with the legal custom of that time, Mary’s name would not have been listed even though she was the person through whom the lineage passed.  So in this case Joseph the “legal” father of Jesus represented his wife Mary in the lineage and Heli was in fact Mary’s father.  Remarkably we have a historical source which confirm that Mary was the daughter of Heli.

This source, which is in some dispute, comes from the Jerusalem Talmud (Chag. 77,4).  Do to the graphic and unflattering nature of the quote it is not appropriate to reproduce here.  You can investigate and decide for yourself if in fact it refers to Mary the Daughter of Heli.

Authors Note: This article had originally stated that the Koran identified Mary as the Daughter of Heli. It seems the translation of these passages that I found were erroneous. The three passages below which I originally quoted should read daughter of Imran. I apologize for the error. (Quran 66:12) (Quran 3:35) (Al-Tirmidhi)

The list of Matthew 1 contains the lineage of David through Solomon.  The lineage is marked by sin and rebellion.  David’s sin with the Bathsheba (another man’s wife) resulted in Solomon, Coniah, and a long line of rebellions and sinful kings. (Please read my article Zerubbabel and the Promise to see how YHWH rectified this conundrum).

Mankind and sin is often marked symbolically in the Bible by the number 6.  The list of Matthew 1 from YHWH to Yeshua/Jesus is marked by 66 names.  It is further worth noting that the Bible in its modern form from YHWH in Genesis to Yeshua in Revelation is marked by 66 books.

The list of Luke 3 contains the lineage of Jesus through David and his son Nathan.  This is likely the physical line of Jesus through Mary.  It is unblemished by the sordid details associated with the lineage through Solomon.  In the Bible the number 7 is a mark of divine perfection.  The list of Luke 3 contains 77 names.

A New Testament Cipher

The lineage of Yeshua/Jesus in Matthew 1 has long been an enigma. For centuries scholars and critics have argued about its legitimacy.  The list claims to be 3 sets of 14 generations (3×14=42), yet it only has 41 names.  Further complicating the list is the fact that Yeshua’s lineage is missing 4 Old Testament kings.  Why would a list like this be placed in the 1st chapter of the 1st book of the New Testament?

I am sorry to disappoint those of you who are skeptics.  This list was not an accident, it was intentional. The “mistakes” are keys to solving an ancient code.  Could it be one of the greatest ciphers of all time? I will let you decide.

See if you can solve it, The 13th Enumeration is the key!

Lineage of Yeshua Matt 1
Matthew 1:1-17 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.   Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;  And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;   And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;   And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;   And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;   And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;   And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;   And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;   And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;   And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:   And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;   And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;   And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;   And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;   And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.   So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

Daniel 1:1-6 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.   And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.   And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;   Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.   And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.   Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

1 Chronicles 3:10-20  And Solomon’s son was Rehoboam, Abia his son, Asa his son, Jehoshaphat his son,   Joram his son, Ahaziah his son, Joash his son,   Amaziah his son, Azariah his son, Jotham his son,   Ahaz his son, Hezekiah his son, Manasseh his son,   Amon his son, Josiah his son.   And the sons of Josiah were, the firstborn Johanan, the second Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, the fourth Shallum.   And the sons of Jehoiakim: Jeconiah his son, Zedekiah his son.   And the sons of Jeconiah; Assir, Salathiel his son,   Malchiram also, and Pedaiah, and Shenazar, Jecamiah, Hoshama, and Nedabiah.   And the sons of Pedaiah were, Zerubbabel, and Shimei: and the sons of Zerubbabel; Meshullam, and Hananiah, and Shelomith their sister:   And Hashubah, and Ohel, and Berechiah, and Hasadiah, Jushabhesed, five.

Numbers 29:12-13 And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work, and ye shall keep a feast unto YHWH seven days:   And ye shall offer a burnt offering, a sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto YHWH; thirteen young bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year; they shall be without blemish:

Numbers 29:17 And on the second day ye shall offer twelve young bullocks, two rams, fourteen lambs of the first year without spot:

Numbers 29:20  And on the third day eleven bullocks, two rams, fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish;

Numbers 29:23  And on the fourth day ten bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish:

Numbers 29:26 And on the fifth day nine bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without spot:

Numbers 29:29  And on the sixth day eight bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish:

Numbers 29:32  And on the seventh day seven bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish:

An Old Testament Enigma

I have always enjoyed trying to solve the unexplained.  No matter what you believe about the Bible it is full of puzzles, enigmas and the unexplained.  Okay, I know some of you have it all figured out but this post is to the rest of us mere mortals.  Throughout the Old Testament, sacrifice was connected to atonement for sin.  This symbolism started in Eden when YHWH killed the first animals to clothe Adam and Eve after their sin and continued up to the New Testament symbolism of Jesus who was as the apostle John describe: “the lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world.

For those familiar with the Old Testament sacrificial system it is obvious there is some symbolic importance to the number of sacrifices during the Biblical holy days.  Even if you don’t believe the Bible is inspired you can’t deny the fact that there had to be symbolic importance connected to the number of sacrifices during these religious celebrations.

The Biblical festival of Succoth is illustrative of my point.  In the table below I have laid out the sacrifices for the “burnt offering” during the 1st seven days of the feast.  The pattern is obviously intentional and it is also unique.  There is nothing quite like it anywhere else in the Scripture.  So what is it’s purpose?

In the New Testament the apostle Paul when discussing the “law” and the sacrificial system as it related to Christ, indicated it was a “shadow of good things to come.” He went on to describe how Jesus fulfilled those Old Testament pictures.  It seems more than coincidental that the Biblical festival most likely associated with the birth of Christ would also have in its ordinances an expression of the very same numerical symbolism as found in the list of Jesus’ lineage in Matthew 1(as discussed here) as well as the chronology associated with his birth and the course of Abijah in Luke 1(as discussed here). .  The numerical symbolism expressed in all three places is but part of a large picture of which the 13th Enumeration is the key.

_________________________________________________
Below is the first and last usage of the term “Burnt Offering”. (Gen 22 & Heb. 10 respectively)

Genesis 22:1-2  And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

Genesis 22:11-13
11 And the angel of YHWH called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.  12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.  13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

Hebrews 10:1-13  For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.  2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.  3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.  4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.  5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:  6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.  7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.  8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;  9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.  10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:  12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;  13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

Numbers 29:12-14   12 And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work, and ye shall keep a feast unto YHWH seven days:  13 And ye shall offer a burnt offering, a sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto YHWH; thirteen young bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year; they shall be without blemish:  14 And their meat offering shall be of flour mingled with oil, three tenth deals unto every bullock of the thirteen bullocks, two tenth deals to each ram of the two rams,

The Course of Abija

How many of you have heard of the course of Abija (Abijah)?  Did you know it is one of the only ways to date the birth of Jesus in the Bible?   95% of Americans will celebrate the birth of Christ this year, so I thought some might be interested in the Biblical case for the timing of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Most are familiar with story of the birth of Christ from Luke 2.  But it is Luke 1 that provides the means by which the timing of the birth of Jesus can be determined.   In Luke 1 we have the story of Zacharias, the priest, and his wife, Elisabeth.  Zacharias and Elisabeth were well on in years and without children.  As it is told in Luke 1, Zacharias was performing his duty in the temple when the angel appeared and told him they would have a son and to call his name John.  Needless to say Zacharias was somewhat incredulous considering their age.  As proof of his message the angel told Zacharias he would be unable to speak until the day the message was fulfilled.

The passage goes on to say that Elisabeth conceived after Zacharias’ service ended.  Then 6 months later Mary, the mother of Jesus, conceived.   Zacharias performed his priestly service during the course of Abijah which fell during the latter part of the 4th month.  From this it is a simple matter to determine the general time of the birth of Jesus.  The chart below gives the priestly courses in relation to the conception of Elisabeth and Mary.

Luke 1:35-37  35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.  36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.  37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

The birth of Jesus fell during the 7th month of the Biblical calendar which is our September/October.   It is during the 7th month that the Biblical holy day of Succoth is celebrated.  The term Succoth comes from the Hebrew word “cukkah” which literally means booth or tabernacle.  The Jewish people were commanded to dwell in booths during the 8 days of this feast.  Succoth is one of the Biblical holydays which all adult males were commanded to observe in Jerusalem.  This is likely the reason the only lodgings which Mary and Joseph found were in a stable.

Further confirmation of the evidence of Luke 1 is found in Luke 2.  The shepherds were still in the fields keeping watch over their flocks when the angles announced the birth of Christ.  This places the birth of Jesus sometime between the spring and fall. It was not common practice in Israel to stay in the fields with the sheep during the winter months.

John 1:14 makes a possible allusion to the birth of Jesus during the feast of Succoth.

John 1:14   14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The “Word” (Jesus) “was made flesh” (conceived) “and dwelt” (skenoo – from the Greek meaning to dwell or fix ones tabernacle.)

Now look at the priestly courses again.  Jesus “dwelt” with man at his birth during the 13th and 14th priestly courses.  The names of these courses were Huppah (Canopy) and Jeshebeab (dwelling of the father). Pretty neat if you ask me!  Now take a look again at my blog post A New Testamen;t Cipher,  note especially the missing names and their arrangement in the list.  Matthew’s lineage of Jesus was intentional wasn’t it?   The 13th Enumeration is the key!

Isaiah 7:14 14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Matthew 1:23  Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Authors Note:
Over the years some of you have written in asking about the priestly courses and their order. This article was based upon the assumption that King David organized the courses in the same manner he did the other courses of service. (i.e. the courses each served their complete term in one service.) Some believe that the priestly courses served only 1 week then returned home and then approximately 6 months later came back and served another week. In the following chart I’ve tried to work out such an organization included the feast days when all priests were required to serve. Please note, neither of the charts in this article account for a 13th month or other required intercalations.

Colossians 1:19   19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

1 Chronicles 24:1-19  Now these are the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron; Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.  2 But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest’s office.  3 And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service.  4 And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; and thus were they divided. Among the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of Ithamar according to the house of their fathers.  5 Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governors of the house of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.  6 And Shemaiah the son of Nethaneel the scribe, one of the Levites, wrote them before the king, and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and before the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites: one principal household being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar.  7 Now the first lot came forth to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,  8 The third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim,  9 The fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin,  10 The seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah,  11 The ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah,  12 The eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim,  13 The thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,  14 The fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer,  15 The seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Aphses,  16 The nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezekel,  17 The one and twentieth to Jachin, the two and twentieth to Gamul,  18 The three and twentieth to Delaiah, the four and twentieth to Maaziah.  19 These were the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of YHWH, according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as YHWH God of Israel had commanded him.

1 Chronicles 27:1-15 Now the children of Israel after their number, to wit, the chief fathers and captains of thousands and hundreds, and their officers that served the king in any matter of the courses, which came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year, of every course were twenty and four thousand.  2 Over the first course for the first month was Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.  3 Of the children of Perez was the chief of all the captains of the host for the first month.  4 And over the course of the second month was Dodai an Ahohite, and of his course was Mikloth also the ruler: in his course likewise were twenty and four thousand.  5 The third captain of the host for the third month was Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, a chief priest: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.  6 This is that Benaiah, who was mighty among the thirty, and above the thirty: and in his course was Ammizabad his son.  7 The fourth captain for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.  8 The fifth captain for the fifth month was Shamhuth the Izrahite: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.  9 The sixth captain for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.  10 The seventh captain for the seventh month was Helez the Pelonite, of the children of Ephraim: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.  11 The eighth captain for the eighth month was Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the Zarhites: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.  12 The ninth captain for the ninth month was Abiezer the Anetothite, of the Benjamites: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.  13 The tenth captain for the tenth month was Maharai the Netophathite, of the Zarhites: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.  14 The eleventh captain for the eleventh month was Benaiah the Pirathonite, of the children of Ephraim: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.  15 The twelfth captain for the twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

1 Kings 4:7 7 And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, which provided victuals for the king and his household: each man his month in a year made provision.

What are the Odds?

What are the Odds?

1,099,511,627,776 is a pretty big number. This number is equal to the odds a coin toss would produce only heads 40 times in a row. To give this number a little perspective you could place one dollar bills end to end and 1.1 trillion of them would reach to our sun.In the 2nd Temple era something of equal improbability took place. Traditionally, on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) a “lot” consisting of a white or black stone was randomly chosen to determine which sacrificial goat would be “for YHWH” and which one would be the “Azazel”, the scapegoat (Lev. 16). Up to 30 AD the results had been random. According to both the Jerusalem and Babylonian Talmud, during the 40 years after 30 AD until the temple was destroyed in 70 AD the black stone was chosen each time the lot was cast. This was quite an unusual occurrence to say the least. According to those same sources several other unexplained occurrences happened during those 40 years.

(The Yerushalmi, p.156-157) “Forty years before the destruction of the Temple, the western light (of the Lamp-stand,, the Menorah) went out, the crimson thread remained crimson, and the lot for the LORD always came up in the left hand. They would close the gates of the temple by night and get up in the morning and find them wide open”.

(Yoma 39a) “ Our rabbis taught: During the last forty years before the destruction of the Tempe the lot (‘For the Lord’) did not come up in the right hand; nor did the crimson-colored strap  become white; nor did the western most light shine; and the doors of the Hekl (Temple)would open by themselves”.

From a statistical standpoint that is pretty amazing odds, right?  Well, check this out.  In 2010, an event took place with odds that were even greater than those described above. On September 21, 2010, the Israel national Lottery or New Lotto drew the numbers 13, 14, 26, 32, 33, 36. Then a few weeks later on October 16, 2010, the New Lotto drew the same numbers only this time they were reversed. (36, 33, 32, 26, 14, 13) The news reports at the time stated the odds of this happening were in the range of 4 trillion to 1. Those same reports stated this had never happened in the history of world lotteries. Now that is a rare event indeed!

As you can imagine the results were challenged.  Lotto officials double checked the drawing and they were recertified, nothing untoward was found. Zvi Gilula, a professor at Hebrew University, was interviewed and he stated these types of odds were used to describe “the probability of life on Mars.”

The above was about the extent of the reporting on this strange event, but a little more context makes this unusual event even more intriguing.  In 2010, the Day of Atonement fell on the 18th of September. The New Lotto’s drawing took place 3 days later on the 21st of September. According to the Biblical calendar this would have been the 13th day of the 7th month. What is even more intriguing is from the 1st drawing on Sept. 21st until the 2nd drawing on Oct. 16th there are 26 days. (2 x 13).

Take a look at these numbers another way. 13+14+26 = 53
32+33+36 = 101

A table of prime numbers:

101 is the 26th prime number. 13, 53, and 101 are the 6th, 16th, and 26th prime numbers respectively.

(For those who like such things here is a little Biblical trivia: In the Old Testament (according to my Bible concordance) YHWH’s name is used 6519 times. In Hebrew the name YHWH has the numerical value of 26.  The prime factors of 6519 are 3, 41, 53.)

Now consider this: During those 26 days, between the two Lotto drawings, the feast of Tabernacles (Sukkoth) was celebrated. The feast of Tabernacles has some unusual instructions. If one were to check out the number of sacrifices and their order during those 7 days you will find a combination of the numbers 13, 14, and 26 (among others).

As described above the lottery tickets include numbers that can be understood within a bigger Biblical context. The odds of just the double drawings by themselves are so high they border on the incredible. Add context, time, and place and it could be argued it moves beyond probability to intent.

Here are a few final points to consider. As in the examples above there is some association between 13, 14, 26, and the Biblical / Hebrew religious calendar. Today the Biblical calendar is still based on the lunar cycle, and the visible light of the moon. Each month the visible reflected light of the moon, for several thousand years of recorded history, has waxed for 13 or 14 days and waned for 13 or 14 days.

On Saturday March 19th, 2011, the moon reached the 13th or 14th day of observable waxing light. This day also marks the closest the moon has been to the earth in the past 19 years. Meton of Athens observed that you could synchronize the lunar and solar calendar (within 2 hrs.) every 19 years. This 19 year intercalary cycle was called the Metonic cycle. In Biblical times this intercalary synchronization of the solar/lunar calendar was accomplished by adding a 13th month every 3 years or so.

The sum of the numbers 13, 14, 26, 32, 33, and 36 equals 154. 154 days from the last drawing of those numbers on October 6th  brings us to Saturday March 19th, 2011, the day of the “supermoon” and closet approach of the moon in the past 19 years.

I am left wondering, what are the odds?

April Fools!

April Fools!

Have you ever wondered about the history of April Fools?  Well the origins of this tradition may date back to the common history of two nations which are still in the news today. By some accounts Israel and Iran are at the brink of war and events seem to be spiraling out of control. The history and dynamics surrounding the relationships of these two nations is fascinating and could well be the basis for the tradition of April Fools.

Nowruz, literally “new light” is the name of the Persian new year celebration which lasts twelve days.  It is celebrated in the spring and is closely related to the Spring Equinox. Historians say it has been celebrated for at least 3000 years. It is a joyous time of visiting family and friends.

On the 13th day of the New Year the Persian people celebrate Sizdah-bedar. Sizdah-bedar literally means getting rid of 13. It is often associated with bad luck and ill omen.  Many Persian families spend the day in the countryside. It is so widely celebrated that some towns seem deserted on this day.  This tradition can be traced as far back as the 6th century BC.  It is also celebrated in Iraq, Azerbaijan, Central Asia and Armenia.  On this day Persian’s play practical jokes on each other and some claim it is the basis for April Fool’s day. It is interesting to note that Sizdah-bedar is strangely absent from much of Persian history after it became part of the Muslim World in the seventh century.

About the same time Sizdah-bedar is first noticed historically in Persian culture the very same day is recorded as a day of infamy in Biblical tradition.   In the book of Esther, a Persian named Haman conceives a plan to destroy the Jewish people. As part of his preparations he starts casting Pur (lots) in the 1st month (Nisan) of the 12th year of the Persian king Ahasuerus. He continues with this ritual for 12 months. Then in the 1st month (13th month from when it began), in the 13th year of king Ahasuerus, on the 13th day of the month the king makes Haman’s plan to destroy all the Jews of the kingdom, law.  This day was Sizdah-bedar, the very same day which Persians for the last 2500 years have associated with bad luck.

Those familiar with the book of Esther know that the date for the extermination of the Jewish people was set for the13th day of 12th month of the 13th year of king Ahasuerus.  It was through the courage of Queen Hadassah (Esther) and her intervention on behalf of her people that a day meant for the destruction of the Jewish people instead became a day of destruction for their enemies.   For over 2500 years the 13th– 15th of Adar is remembered as a day of deliverance for the Jewish people in their celebration of Purim.

Ironic, isn’t it, that Sizdah-bedar, the day of getting rid of 13, was the day Haman was given permission to “get rid” of a nation of people who it could be argued consisted of 13 tribes.

So next time April comes around give a thought to one of the greatest April fools of all time.  Consider a man who had determined evil upon a whole race of people and ended up reaping what he had sown.

April fools indeed!

A True “American Da Vinci Code”

The New York Historic Districts Council called this symbol the “American Da Vinci Code” . The New Yorker magazine headlined: “Mystery On Pearl Street”. Several other major news papers wrote articles on this mysterious brick symbol. It was found on the building built by a devout Baptist in 1832 – and no, I’m not kidding. Many have tried to solve this early American cipher but they have failed.  Can you solve this true American “Da Vinci Code”: The 13th Enumeration is the key!

Below is some more background information on this great American enigma.

William Colgate (1753-1857) Early American entrepreneur and soap manufacturer. (Colgate/Palmolive)

Colgate was a Devout Baptist who helped found the Baptist Education Society in 1817 with 13 men, 13 dollars, 13 prayers, and 13 articles. This organization later evolved into Colgate University located at 13 Oak Drive in Hamilton, NY, 13346. As part of Colgate tradition, alumni are encouraged to wear Colgate apparel every Friday the 13th. The senior honor society, Konosioni, is composed of 13 women and 13 men.

William Colgate’s power and influence extended into banking and politics through the efforts of himself and his sons. James Colgate was a founding member of the New York Gold Exchange which was instrumental in getting a gold standard established in America. The Colgates were also part of the Triennial Baptists who were instrumental in getting Abraham Lincoln elected. During the panic of 1873, J.B.Colgate & Company Bank under James Colgate’s direction loaned the United States money which helped avert an economic collapse.

The brickwork symbol above was discovered on a building at 211 Pearl Street. This building was built by William Colgate in 1832.  211 Pearl Street was one of Colgate’s most valued properties and was willed to his children with the stipulation that it could not be sold until 15 years after his death. Due to the dedicated efforts of Alan Solomon, the brickwork symbol was preserved, even though the building was eventually torn down several years after the discovery of the symbol.

Legends of the Phoenix

The phoenix is a fantastic legend which has captured the imaginations of people down through the millenniums. Is it only a myth or is it like many such stories based on some ancient event? In my blog post today we will explore the history of this ancient legend. The truth may surprise you. (Authors note: This is another in a series of articles I wrote several years ago. After Two Days

How many times have we seen a Scripture abused when someone tries to apply it without consideration to context? In this essay I would like to look at a well known passage of Scripture in light of the context in which it was given.   Hopefully it will offer a new perspective some of you may not have considered. This will be a critical look at one of the great passages of Messianic reassurance which has a direct bearing on our generation.  So let’s roll up our sleeves and take a look:

2 Peter 3:1-10  This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:  2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:  3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,  4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.  5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:  6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:  7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.  8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.  9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.  10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

In order to define the context we must first identify the people to whom this epistle was written. Verse 1 above tells us this epistle was a follow-up to one written earlier. In Peter’s first epistle we find our answer.

1 Peter 2:12  12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

The epistles of Peter were written to Jewish believers. Paul confirms this in Galatians 2 where he spells out Peter’s apostleship:

Galatians 2:8   8 (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)

To truly understand the epistles of Peter then, we must view them through the eyes of a Jewish believer. With this in mind let’s take another look at 2 Peter 3.  The passage indicates there was some doubt among the Jewish believers about the return of Jesus.  Peter explains to those who were in doubt that they had not been forgotten but the Messiah had not returned yet because there was a greater purpose at work.  That purpose was YHWH’s desire to see all of them come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:4  4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

2 Peter 3:9  9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

So what does Peter offer those Jewish believers as reassurance that YHWH had not forgotten them?

2 Peter 3:8  8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

Say what? To us, 2000 years removed, this statement might not make a lot of sense, but to a Jewish believer this reference would have been readily understood.  For those not familiar with the Old Testament it will take a little effort to understand this statement.  Let’s look back at verse 2 now for some more clues. By way of introduction Peter specifically tells his audience to:

…… be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour. 2 Peter 3:2  2

Peter tells them first to remember the words of the holy prophets.  There are several clues which indicate Peter had a specific prophet in mind but one in particular that leaves no doubt. Every Jewish believer would have recognized the significance of 1 Peter 2:10:

1 Peter 2:10   10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Have any of you heard these words before?  You might not have but any Jewish person would have instantly known them.  These words are taken from the first and second chapter of the book of Hosea (Salvation).  YHWH uses Hosea, his wives, and children to make a prophetic statement concerning the sin of Israel and Judah and their eventual repentance and restoration.

Hosea 1:9-11  9 Then said God, Call his name Loammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God.  10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.  11 Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

Hosea 2:23  23 And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God.

The book of Hosea not only explains that Israel and Judah will eventually return to YHWH and be restored to their land, but it also tells them when it will happen.

Hosea 5:14 – 6:3   14 For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue him.  15 I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.  Come, and let us return unto YHWH: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.  2 After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.  3 Then shall we know, if we follow on to know YHWH: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

What were Peter’s words of reassurance concerning the perceived delay of the Messiah?  He told not to be ignorant of just one thing:

2 Peter 3:8  8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

See what happens when Scripture is understood in context.  Just in case you aren’t convinced I give you the words of James who in the following passage is also encouraging his Jewish brethren to have patience concerning the Messiah’s return.  Here he also quotes a portion of Hosea 6:

James 5:7-8   7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord.Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.  8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.

Doesn’t a little context change the whole picture?  Almost 2000 years ago Israel rejected the “Hosea”/Salvation of YHWH.  According to the apostle Paul this was all part of the plan of YHWH to bring salvation (Hosea) to all people.  (For those who don’t know, the Hebrew version of Jesus’s name is Yehowshuwa/Yeshua/Joshua.  This means YHWH is Salvation. Also the Old Testament Joshua/Yeshua was originally named Hosea before his name was changed by Moses.)

Romans 11:25-32  25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.  26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:  27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.  28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes.  29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.  30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:  31 Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.  32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.

My fellow believers, it has been almost “two days” since YHWH brought blindness upon Israel so that the Gentiles might also learn of Yeshua, the Salvation of YHWH . The 3rd day is almost upon us and the times of the Gentiles are winding down.  Israel’s “Hosea” (Salvation) will return and we will witness the fulfillment of Luke 13:35:

Luke 13:35   35 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of YHWH.

Psalm 118:25-26  25 Save now, I beseech thee, O YHWH: O YHWH, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.  26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of YHWH: we have blessed you out of the house of YHWH.

Both Hosea and James tell us our Salvation comes as the early and latter rain. We have already had the spring rains when Yeshua came the first time as a suffering servant. Are you ready for the fall rains and the return of Yeshua as King?
